ACCOMMODATION SOUTH AFRICA TRANSPORT
TRAVELLING IN SOUTH AFRICA

There are various forms of transportation in South Africa. Like many African cities, South Africa has a chaotic informal public transport system in the form of minibus "taxis". These are not taxis in the typical Western sense of the term as they won't give you a lift to your doorstep. Rather, they are small-scale bus services, often unmarked, operating with neither timetables nor formal stops. These minibus taxis are the cheapest form of transport in South Africa and are the daily transport lifeline of the bulk of the working population.

There are conventional metered taxis, but unlike in many other countries these do not cruise the streets in search of passengers and must generally be summonsed by telephone. Major hotels do often reserve bays for taxi companies or reception staff can quickly make arrangements for visitors.

The metro railway system is the cheapest form of transport in South Africa and it is used by the huge numbers of workers to commute between home and workplace every day. For the typical tourist, the railway infrastructure is therefore not an option. It does not cover all areas, which can be a problem when getting around, and it is overcrowded most of the time. Safety is another major concern.

South Africa is not a country to be using taxi's. Car hire is a good option, but be sure it is air conditioned and in good working order. If you are a nervous traveller take a package deal so you have a guide to look after you. Ensure you have a full tank of fuel if driving. Take care when getting in and out of the car, where you park and stay half a cars length behind the car in front when stopped at junctions or traffic lights, ready to be able to pull out of any nasty situation.

DRIVING TIPS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Please note that in South Africa, all vehicles are driven on the left hand side of the road.

Procedure at a 4 way stop
* When approaching the stop street, stop and make sure that there is no oncoming traffic before you proceed.
* If there is another vehicle already at the stop street, it has the right of way.
* If you stop at the same time as another vehicle, common courtesy applies and either vehicle may proceed first.
* Always ensure that your vehicle comes to a complete stop before you proceed.

Procedure at a traffic light
* If the light is green, you may proceed. It is always advisable to slow down at a green light and check for approaching traffic.
* If you are turning right and the light is green, the approaching traffic has right of way. Wait for the approaching traffic to pass before you proceed.
* If you are turning left and the light is green, you may proceed.
* If the traffic light turns amber, slow down and stop.
* If the light is red, stop and wait until it is green before proceding.

Identifying arrows at a traffic light
* A flashing green arrow indicates you may turn in the direction indicated.
* A flashing red arrow on your left indicates that you may turn if no other traffic is approaching.
* A steady red or green arrow indicates that you may proceed with caution.
* When traffic lights are out of order, please treat the intersection as a four way stop.

Approaching a traffic circle
* Always yield to the traffic approaching from the right at a traffic circle.
* Vehicles already in the traffic circle and those vehicles entering the circle on your right have the right of way.
* Proceed with caution only once all vehicles on your right have passed.
* Note that all vehicles already in the circle have right of way.

Parking
* It is illegal to park a vehicle on the opposite side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
